Vern was born November 12, 1928 in Rockwood Township to Jay and Laura Edwards. He grew up in Rockwood Township, graduating from the eighth grade at the Rockwood School. He farmed in cooperation with his parents, supplementing his income from logging and carpentry projects, learning the basics of that trade from his uncle, Charles Bohlmann. He married Doris Wright on November 27, 1949, and the made their home on Arrow Lake in Rockwood Township until the present day.

Vern worked at Northern Farm Service and attended evening classes towards completion of his carpentry apprenticeship. He worked for Dufseth Brothers Construction at Blackduck for several years, and was then hired by Twin City Construction of Fargo-Moorehead. He was a hard worker and excelled at his craft, was promoted to Foreman and ultimately Superintendent, overseeing large construction projects at Bemidji State University, several area schools, hospitals and commercial buildings in Minnesota and North Dakota.

In 1976 he was hired by the Bemidji School District as the Building and Grounds Supervisor, a position he held until retirement.

Although he was not highly educated, he had the unique ability to read and understand complicated blueprints, commit much of the information to memory, and had the foresight and planning ability to coordinate large construction projects to completion on time and within budget.

Vern was an avid deer hunter, the first one in the woods in the morning, the last one back at night, and celebrated his 85th birthday by filling out his deer tag. He loved his family, and enjoyed hosting large gatherings at the lake for Christmas, Memorial Day, and the July 4th holiday. He restored a classic 1960 Chevy, and was a member of the Paul Bunyan Vintage Auto Club. He loved the outdoors, and could often be seen grooming his yard to perfection. He enjoyed storytelling, telling tales about people he knew, growing up during hard times, and his deer hunting escapades. Vern was a cowboy at heart, Gene Autry was his hero, and he enjoyed watching the Western Channel for hours each day.

Vern will be sadly missed by children Wayne (Wavie) Edwards of Gilbert, MN, Jody (Chris) Nelson of Chaska, MN, TerriSue Edwards of Bemidji, and Robyn Edwards (Mike Braun) of Bemidji, 16 Grandchildren, 20 Great-Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Doris Edwards, a sister LeOra Delaney of Bemidji, and parents Jay and Laura Edwards.
