Blackduck teachers have once again honored a member of the school's administrative staff as this year's Friend of Education.

The honor went to Tammy Vernlund, who is the district's administrative secretary and payroll manager.

She has been a member of the staff since August of 1994 and has now served under five different school district superintendents including the current superintendent Robert Doetsch.

The selection of the Friend of Education annual recognition is made by teachers through their organization, the Blackduck Education Association. Criteria include the person's overall support of the education process.

In 2007, the award was presented to the district's business manager, Dave Decker.

Vernlund is married and she and her husband have a daughter, Jenny, married to Mike Olafson. Above her desk at work, she proudly shows off photographs of two grandchildren, Jenny and Mike's children.

The BEA award to Vernlund was announced earlier at a meeting of the school board in May, at the same time that Peggy Eggert was announced as the district's Teacher of the Year.

(Eggert's story will be reviewed in next week's American)
