Verna Marie (Riles) Hubbard

Verna Marie (Riles) Hubbard, 97, of Bemidji, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Bemidji with the Rev. James De Smidt officiating and the Rev. Raymond Klug assisting. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be, in the spring, in the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck.

Pallbearers will be Tom Heath, James Heath, Craig Miller, Ron Brooks, Dan Brooks, Scott Brooks, Dave Liberty, Gary Liberty, Mike Liberty and Bob Klug Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Deborah Schuman, Diane Bajari, Michelle Juen, Laurie Miller, Corine Knodel and Ginger Collison.

She was born May 24, 1911, to United States citizens, Floyd and Clara (Johnson) Riles in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Canada. As a young girl she lived in Swanville, Minn., with her grandmother and grandfather Johnson.

She attended school in Swanville. She also lived with her aunt and uncle, Maude and Jess Hall in Long Prairie, Minn. After school, she moved to Bemidji to live with her mother, Clara, and stepfather, Henry DeRosier. She married Lloyd Hubbard Oct. 17, 1931, in Bemidji. They made their home in Bemidji for their whole married life except for one year during World War II when they lived in Rosemount, Minn. She was known for her figurines that she made and painted, teaching Girl Scout groups, painting, cooking and her flower garden. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary for 56 years and was a charter member of Bemidji Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeannine Brooks of Bemidji, Roberta (Kenneth) Liberty of Bemidji, Marjorie (Robert) Klug of Blackduck and Mary Lou (Richard) Miller of Bemidji; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and half-sister, Ruth DeRosier Larson of Grand Forks, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, William Riles; half-brothers, Lyle and Dale De Rosier; and one grandson.
