Verna Christine (Barr) Haines

Verna Christine (Barr) Haines, 90, of Becida, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz.

She was born June 20, 1918, to Fred Barr and Anna (Haugan) Barr in Hubbard County. She was a member of a pioneer family in the community of Becida, Fern Township, Hubbard County. She was raised among many immigrant and pioneer homesteaders. Their stories gave her a lifetime interest in family history. In1940, she graduated from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English. Following her graduation from college, she worked for the FBI as one of three secretaries in the office of J. Edgar Hoover. She was also a teacher in Deer River, Minn., and Plentywood, Mont. She married Thomas Haines in Williston, N.D. in 1945. He died in 1974. She was a school teacher for 35 years with the Rockford Public School in Rockford, Ill. In retirement, she took a memorable trip to Norway. She communicated with her extended family members throughout the United States, Canada and Norway. She was a long-term member of Sigdalslag. She contributed information to the Hubbard County Historical Society, including articles about both her parents and extended family. Additionally, she wrote a history of Fern Township in Hubbard County. She was the co-author of a book of family history titled "Engebret Kristiansen Haugan and Family, Pioneers from Sigdal." The book has completed and published at the time of her 90th birthday in June.
