PERLEY, Minn. – A suspect has been apprehended in a shooting that wounded a Norman County deputy early Tuesday morning near Perley in northwest Minnesota.

Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said an arrest took place about 10:40 a.m. not far from where the shooting occurred.

He said the incident began about 8:30 a.m., when a Norman County Deputy made a traffic stop on County Road 39 east of Perley.

At some point during the stop, the deputy and the driver of the car exchanged gunfire and the deputy was wounded, Bergquist said.

The deputy, who is not being named, was taken to a Fargo hospital, according to Bergquist.

The Norman County Sheriff’s Department declined to answer questions Tuesday morning, stating authorities there were busy dealing with the situation. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department was called in to assist.

Perley is just east of the Red River and about 23 miles north of Moorhead on U.S. Highway 75.

A number of facilities in Norman County went into full lockdown until the situation was resolved.

That includes the Benedictine Living Community in Ada and the nearby Bridges Medical Center, according to Tyler Huemberg, administrator and CEO at Benedictine, an assisted living and nursing facility.

Those lockdowns, and one at Norman County West Elementary School, were lifted after word of the arrest spread.
