UPDATED: Mother, 2 children identified in Zimmerman deaths
ZIMMERMAN - Three people found dead in a Zimmerman home over the weekend were identified Monday as a mother and her two children.
Authorities released few details Monday, but Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott said authorities were not seeking suspects in the deaths of Stephanie Shields, 35, 7-year-old Nolan Shields and 6-year-old Josephine Shields. The causes of their deaths were not immediately released, but their bodies were taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies.
Brott said the bodies were found about 10 a.m. Sunday by a family member, and that all three were dead when deputies arrived. The identity of that family member has not been revealed. Authorities have not said whether anyone was in custody.
Brott said his office's Criminal Investigation Division and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were continuing to investigate to try to determine what happened.
"We're a small-town family, and one of our families lost some loved ones," said Zimmerman Mayor Dave Earenfight. "We're mourning and we'll be praying for them."
Earenfight said prayers for the family would be offered at a City Council meeting scheduled for Monday night.
Messages left for Shields' husband and other family members were not immediately returned Monday. Online court records show that neither Shields nor her husband have criminal records. Brott told the St. Cloud Times on Monday that Shields' husband moved out of the residence within the last week — but that a review of calls for service in the last five years shows that his office has never been called to the house.
Zimmerman, a city of about 5,000 people, is about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
