UPDATE: Icy conditions cause accidents on Highway 2 west of Bemidji
At least three accidents were observed on Highway 2 west of Bemidji, according to Bemidji Pioneer photographer Monte Draper, who was on the scene this morning. A steady drizzle created hazardous road conditions, and the highway has been closed while sand and gravel can be applied.
Draper reported two rollovers in the area between Bemidji and Solway. Another vehicle went into the ditch trying to avoid a collision.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises drivers to slow down and drive with extreme caution due to icy roads caused by drizzle and freezing temperatures.
Mn/DOT crews are doing their part to make highways safe. Motorists should remember to:
Drive slowly on bridges, overpasses and tunnels.
Use a safe speed for winter driving conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.
Keep a safe stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you.
Keep both hands on the steering wheel, your eyes on the road and your attention on your driving.
Turn off cruise control.
