UPDATE 7 a.m.: Two dead in head-on crash south of Bemidji
HUBBARD COUNTY -- An 89-year-old man and 87-year-old woman from Laporte died in a fatal head-on crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 71 south of Bemidji.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was northbound on Highway 71 and struck a 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette headed southbound near mile marker 299, which is nine miles south of Bemidji. The Patrol responded to the crash at 2:34 p.m.
The 89-year-old male driver and 87-year-old female passenger in the Oldsmobile have been identified as James B. Carlson and Phyllis M. Carlson, they died on the scene, the Patrol said. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado has been identified as Russell C. Sandry, 76, of Box Elder, S.D., he sustained serious injuries in the crash. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident, the Patrol said.
The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the scene.
