The Wednesday, Aug. 11, editorial challenging federal action to save education by appropriating money to retain teachers deserves review.
The Constitution squarely puts responsibility for public education in the hands of the states.
What have the states done:
- Eliminated pre-school funding for badly needed early education.
- Delay payment of funds that require school districts to lend money to their benefactor (the state).
- Increase class size so no time is available for individual attention.
- And much more!
These kids are our future so let's make every opportunity count that they are started with an adequate education.
It's noteworthy that the previous White House found time to about double the national debt and left an economic disaster that necessitates extraordinary measures outlined in the editorial and this response.
