BEMIDJI — Bemidji State senior Emily Erickson scored her first goal of the season, but 10th-ranked North Dakota defeated the Beavers 3-1 Saturday to open a Western Collegiate Hockey Association women’s hockey series at the Sanford Center.

Bemidji State is now 2-7-2 on the season with a 1-5-1-0 WCHA mark. The loss was BSU’s fifth straight against North Dakota. UND has knocked Bemidji State out of the conference playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

In a slower-paced first period that didn’t feature many quality scoring opportunities, UND jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Allison Parizek scored on and individual effort that was completed with a shot from the right faceoff circle that squeaked under the pads of BSU netminder Jessica Havel.

North Dakota added to its lead in the second period when Jocelyne Lamoureux found Michelle Karvinen alone in the slot and Karvinen blasted a one-time shot past Havel.

Just over a minute later, Bemidji State halved its deficit when Erickson pounced on a loose puck in the blue paint for her first goal of 2012-13 and first in 10 games played. Her scoring drought dated back to a five-point effort in a win over St. Cloud State.

Senior defenseman Monique Lamoureux scored on a slapshot from the point with 26 seconds left in the period to restore North Dakota’s two-goal cushion.

Havel set a career-best by stopping 29 shots in the 3-1 decision.

The teams will meet again at 2:07 p.m. today at the Sanford Center.
