Two school elections held Tuesday in Beltrami County
Elections in two Beltrami County school districts -- Red Lake and Kelliher -- were held Tuesday, an off-year election.
Voters were expected to approve a maximum effort capital loan referendum for the Red Lake School District, which this year is seeking $35 million in public works bonding from the Minnesota Legislature.
The funds, while technically a loan, are based on the district's ability to repay them. Since very little of the reservation is taxable -- only some old railroad property near Redby -- the loan is essential a grant.
Planned is building, renovations, additions, remodeling, and demolition to the Red Lake High School, Red Lake Middle School, Red Lake and Ponemah Elementary schools and Red Lake Early Childhood Center.
Voters in Kelliher also faced an easy election as three candidates vied for three spots on the Kelliher School Board.
Seeking four-year posts to the six-member board were incumbent Edward Gehlert and newcomers Robert Hoyum and Barbara Woltier.
Barring write-in challenges, the three ought to win seats.
