Jake Crosby and Colton Doty dropped their opening matches Friday at the Class 3A state wrestling meet and their future in the meet depended upon the success of their first-round opponents.

Doty was beaten 14-5 by Colten LaChance of Hastings in the 140-pound first round and LaChance stopped Cody Skog of Cambridge-Isanti in the second round.

LaChance's victory gave Doty new life as he survived to face Skog in Friday's wrestlebacks.

Doty dominated Skog for all but the final seconds of the wrestleback as he forged a 16-7 lead late in the third period only to be taken down and pinned with 10 seconds to go.

Doty ended the season with a 28-10 record.

Crosby was pinned in 3:02 by Tyler Tischer of Cambridge-Isanti in the opening round at 125 pounds but Tischer lost to Dakota Trom of Apple Valley in the second round so Crosby was eliminated after one match.

Crosby and Tischer battled to a 0-0 draw after the opening period. Crosby chose down to start the second stanza and promptly recorded an escape to lead 1-0.

Tischer, however, countered with a takedown and quickly threw Crosby on his back for the pin at 3:02.

Doty's 140-pound battle against LaChance went the distance although LaChance, who is ranked second at that weight among Class 3A wrestlers, was in command most of the way and eventually posted a 14-5 win.

The wrestlers exchanged take downs and escapes during the first two minutes and were tied 3-3 heading into the second period.

LaChance took the lead with a takedown and by period's end had added a near fall for an 8-3 lead.

The third period followed a pattern of takedowns and escapes. LaChance recorded three takedowns in the period and twice allowed Doty to escape.

"Jake and Colton both wrestled well," said Lumberjacks coach Rance Bahr. "They gave great efforts but they faced tough competition and things didn't work out for them.

"Competing at the state level has been a learning experience for Colton, Jake and the entire team," the coach continued.

"Qualifying for state has been a positive for our entire program."
