Heading into Tuesday's Section 8 boys Nordic ski meet everyone knew that the champion would be either Bemidji or Brainerd.

The two programs have dueled neck-and-neck all winter and one of them would earn bragging rights Tuesday when it mattered. And when it mattered Brainerd was just a little better.

"Everybody gave it their all but it wasn't quite enough," said Lumberjakcs coach Mark Walters after his team had to settle for second place. "Despite losing the section championship this team has much to be proud of."

Brainerd took a lead after Tuesday morning's 5-km skate leg and a Bemidji comeback in the 4.7-km classical leg came up a little short.

The Warriors finished with 378 points while BHS tallied 366. St. Cloud Tech was third with 343. Trek North finished eighth with 262.

Bemidji will be represented at next week's state meet by Tony Sagedahl and Kyle Sagedahl. Tony finished fourth individually with a combined time of 23:53 while Kyle was fifth in 23:54.

Just missing out on a state trip by one place and one second was Sam Dwyer who placed 14th overall in 25:11. Dwyer, however, was ninth among the non-Brainerd skiers and only the top eight earned a trip to the state meet.

"We couldn't get any more from Tony or Kyle and they skied great races,"

Walters said. "All of our boys skied well but the third and fourth kids from Brainerd skied as well as they have all year. And that was the difference."

Adam Holter was 15th overall while Eli Rassler was 17th.

The Lumberjacks girls finished fifth overall and Morgan Sagedahl just missed making state individually as the eighth grader was ninth among the individual qualifiers.

Little Falls claimed the title with 385 points. St. Cloud Cathedral was second with 365.Bemidji tallied 310 for fifth and Trek North was sixth with 307.
