In an email sent Thursday afternoon, Murphy confirmed a rumor circulating in the community that he would be vacating his position.

"Over a period of time, the County Board and I have reached a mutual decision to separate," he wrote. "There are career opportunities that I want to explore and the County Board is anxious to move forward with decisions on the future direction of county administration."

He attached a letter of resignation dated today, March 29, sent to the Beltrami County Board of Commissioners.

"I have received an attractive employment offer that I am considering and I may take some time to consider additional options," Murphy wrote in his letter of resignation. "I am very proud of what has been accomplished in Beltrami County over the past 10.5 years."

He listed achievements such as construction or remodeling of more than 22,000 square feet of building space, completed road projects and improvements to the county bond rating.

"It's natural that there are detractors or critics associated with any effort to introduce change or to labor over tough issues," he wrote in his resignation letter. Perhaps that fact is even prevalent in the public sector. I respect the challenging responsibilities that you have accepted as County Commissioners. I with you the very best as you strive forward and as you work to deliver those outcomes most valued by the citizens of Beltrami County."
