Tips offered to help motorists during inclement weather
BEMIDJI – The Minnesota Department of Transportation issued warnings Thursday to advise drivers to use caution driving through Saturday.
Freezing rain and snow was expected to create a wintery mix and hazardous driving conditions.
In addition, some areas of northwest Minnesota could face limited visibility.
The following tips from MnDOT aim to help motorists arrive at their destinations safely.
Drivers are encouraged to:
-- Check road conditions at www.511mn.org or call 511; plan ahead regarding travel time and don’t put your schedule before safety.
-- Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
-- Stay back at least five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud. Keep a safe stopping distance from all other vehicles.
-- Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They may also travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
-- Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions. Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.
-- Keep headlights on and cruise control off
-- Drive using both hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road
