Thomas E. Austreng, 81, of Waskish, Minnesota, formerly of Babbitt, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona with his family by his side.
Funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN with Rev. Edward Anderson officiating. Visitation will be Monday, January 27 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m and one hour before the services at the funeral home. Interment will be at the South Arm Cemetery in Turtle River Township, Bemidji, MN immediately following. Casketbearers will be his eight grandsons.
Thomas was born June 29, 1932 in Blackduck, Minnesota. Tom proudly served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married Beverly Mae Beattie on June 6, 1956 in Crookston, MN. He then worked at Reserve Mining Company for 30 years as a jet drill operator and later as a foreman. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT for many years in Babbitt. Tom and Bev spent winters in Arizona for over 25 years. Tom played a mean game of cards, loved wood-working and fixing things. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a treasured friend to many. He loved people and he loved life. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Beverly, daughters Terry (Reid) Lamppa of Warroad, MN, Tammy (Pat) Rogers of Bemidji, MN, brother Adolf (Carol) Austreng, grandchildren Dustin (Jackie) Lamppa, Michele Lamppa (Sean OHea), Steven Rogers (engaged to Jennifer Beasley), Scott (Emily) Rogers, Darrin (Charity) Rogers, Angela (Roderic) Kargel, Elizabeth (Alphonsus) Kargel, Luke Rogers, Joseph Rogers, Thomas Rogers, Mary Rogers, Jacob Rogers, Sarah Rogers, Hannah Rogers, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helmer and Anna Austreng, siblings Alvin Austreng, Helen Harmeyer, Morris Austreng, Earl Austreng, and foster parents, namely the T.M. Hansons and L. C. Parkers. Condolences may be left at ceasefuneralhome.com.
