Thank you: Good work toward suicide prevention
Thank you and Miigwetch to everyone who participated in the recent events highlighting National Suicide Prevention Week.
September 10-15 was proclaimed Suicide Prevention Week by Mayor Dave Larson. The week opened with a concert by Saphire Brown and her Courage Campaign against Bullying.
On Sept. 15, more than 300 participants, 40 agencies and businesses and 60 volunteers took another “step forward toward hope” when they gathered as suicide loss survivors, participants, supporters and volunteers for the 6th annual Run/Walk/Skate for Suicide Prevention. We thank all the participants and volunteers, and the agencies and businesses that served as sponsors and donors.
This year’s event garnered a significant increase in support from the Bemidji area and beyond.
Proceeds from the event support activities of the Beltrami Area Suicide Prevention Program. Activities include education and awareness programming to every high school in Beltrami County, local colleges and universities and community organizations. The program also provides assistance to suicide loss survivors through information referral and a support group.
It is difficult to find the appropriate words to express our gratitude for the generosity of numerous individuals, groups, agencies and businesses that contributed to the healing event for so many in our community. Thank you for your efforts to raise public awareness about suicide and encourage individuals to ask for help.
