MOORHEAD — A busy week ended with two more victories for the Bemidji girls tennis team as the Lumberjacks defeated Moorhead and Fergus Falls 7-0 Friday in Moorhead.

Friday’s wins gave the Lumberjacks a 5-0 record for the week and upped Bemidji’s overall dual record to 12-1.

Rain threatened to fall through both matches Friday and the uncertain weather conditions prompted the coaches to shorten the matches by starting each set with a 2-2 score.

“With the threat of rain and the 2-2 score before each set our goal was to try to make short work of each match,” said BHS coach Mark Fodness.

Claudia Bellew set the tone in each match by posting a pair of 6-3, 6-2 victories at first singles. Alexis Konecne also went 2-0 at second singles, dropping four total games against her Moorhead opponent and only one in the Fergus Falls match.

Abbie Kelm also went 2-0 at third singles, losing only one game in her two victories.

Sarah McNallan breezed to a win at fourth singles in the Moorhead match while Mattie Osborn assumed those duties against Fergus Falls and did not drop a game.

Annika Johnson and Olivia Dickinson collected a pair of wins at first doubles as did Kenzie Schultz and Jenna Lee at second.

Kayle Snell teamed with Nicolette Roy for a win over Moorhead at third doubles while McKayla Beaulieu and Erin Edlund won in that spot against Fergus Falls.

“It was important for us to get these matches in because Moorhead and Fergus Falls are section opponents,” Fodness said. “With the threatening weather we didn’t know how much time we had so our goal was to hustle and end the matches as quickly as we could.

“And I was very pleased with the way the girls played.”
