DETROIT LAKES -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team improved its record to 7-1 in dual meets with a sweep of East Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes Tuesday afternoon.

"I thought we played some of our best tennis today," Lumberjacks head coach Mark Fodness said. "Our doubles teams especially really moved well and controlled play on the courts throughout the day. This was a big step for us. If we can keep up our aggressive play at the net it will really pay off in some of our close matches."

The Lumberjacks swept Detroit Lakes 7-0. In all seven matches the Lumberjacks needed just two sets to win.

Against East Grand Forks the Lumberjacks won 6-1; the Green Wave won just one match. Chessa Jones defeated Claudia Bellew at No. 1 singles but needed a first-set tiebreaker to do it. The final score was 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

The Lumberjacks swept the other matches, including No. 2, 3 and 4 singles (Alexis Kocene, Abbie Kelm and Mattie Osborn, respectively) and all three doubles matches.

Fodness said Kelm's match -- a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of East Grand Forks' Cynthia Loren -- pointed to improved overall singles play this season. Loren defeated Kelm last time they played earlier this season.

"In singles play overall we generally played with a lot of focus and moved our opponents around the court," Fodness said. "We played with a better sense of purpose. A great example was seeing Abbie Kelm win 6-0, 6-0 against a player that she had struggled to beat when we saw (East Grand Forks) earlier this year.

"That match is a good example of how small adjustments can make a real difference on the court. We'll need this same type of effort when we travel to Thief River Falls on Thursday."

The Lumberjacks and the Prowlers will play a dual meet in Thief River Falls; it will be very important to determine seeding for the Section 8AA tournament, which begins Oct. 4
