ST. CLOUD -- Bemidji's doubles team of Matt Hokanson and Noah Holter advanced to the final of the Section 8-2A tournament Wednesday but dropped its last two matches, including the battle for True Second, and came up short in its bid for a trip to the state meet.

After zipping past Zach House and John Budde of St. Michael, Hokanson and Holter belted Andy Foley and Brady Roden of St. Cloud Tech 6-3, 6-4.

The latter victory vaulted the BHS duo into the section final where Hokanson and Holter fell 6-0, 6-0 to the top seed from the South Sub-Section, Riley Bates and Riley Peterson of St. Cloud Tech.

Still alive in the True Second match, Hokanson and Holter lost 7-5, 6-1 to Dawson Brown and Erik Tungland of Becker and were denied a trip to state.

Bemidji's other doubles team in Wednesday's section meet featured Sam Howard and Kole Pankow and they lost to Bates and Peterson 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.

"Matt and Noah got off to a nice start against St. Michael. They played smart and were aggressive and kept playing that way most of the day," said Jacks coach Mark Fodness. "In the semifinals we really had to bring our best effort against a tough Tech team and we played our best tennis of the day.

"Everytime Tech made a run we had an answer and we really never let them get any momentum."

The roles were reversed in the finals, however.

"The top Tech team (Bates and Peterson) really made a statement and never let us get going," Fodness said. "To shut out a team as strong as ours is a pretty impressive feat."

Following the loss Hokanson and Holter had to sit and wait to see which team would survive through the loser's bracket and earn a berth in the True Second match.

"The Becker team brought momentum into the match and it took us awhile to get going," Fodness said. "We were down 4-0 but then went on a 5-1 run and had a chance to hold serve and go up 6-5 but just missed.

"Once Becker won the first set it seemed there was no stopping them. It was a well-played match and Becker deserves the credit."
