SARTELL – The Bemidji High School tennis team moved on to the semifinals of the Section 8AA tournament Saturday night with a 7-0 win over Monticello.

The Lumberjacks moved on to play St. Cloud Tech for the section championship but that result was not available at presstime.

Against Monticello, the Lumberjacks expected a closer match than they got, according to head coach Mark Fodness.

“We have waited all year to play a match where, up and down the lineup, we had our top performances,” the BHS coach said. “We picked a great time to play at that level tonight against Monticello. They were a strong team. We expected a very close match.”

Instead, the Lumberjacks lost only one game en route to the 7-0 victory.

Jessica Solberg, Amy Frosaker and Kenzie Schultz each won their singles matches in straight sets. No. 2 singles Claudia Bellew played the closest singles match, winning the first set 6-2, then dropping the second 6-7 before rallying to win the third set big, 6-1.

In doubles, all three teams won in straight sets.

Monticello had defeated Willmar 5-2 to get to the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, St. Cloud Tech had no trouble. Tech beat Becker 6-1 in the quarterfinals before topping Brainerd 6-1 in the semifinals.
