GRAND FORKS — The Bemidji High School girls tennis team extended its record in dual meets to 15-1 Tuesday with a pair of wins against Crookston and East Grand Forks.

Against Crookston the Lumberjacks won 6-1 but head coach Mark Fodness said none of his players were totally dominant.

“We struggled a bit in our match against Crookston although the final score wouldn’t show it,” he said. “A lot of the matches were three sets.

At No. 1 singles Claudia Bellew swept Amber Trosted 6-1, 6-2 and Abbie Kelm swept Lydia Schafer 6-0, 6-0.

“I don’t think any of the girls felt really good about the way they played except for Claudia at first singles, who played really well even though she was sick, and Abbie at third singles,” Fodness said.

Four of the other matches went the full three sets.

Fodness said Crookston is a good team and the fact that the Lumberjacks were able to outlast the Pirates bodes well for BHS during the Section 8-2A tournament this weekend.

“The girls know they did not have their best effort today and it shows that if you don’t play at a high-level any team can challenge you and maybe beat you,” Fodness said. “So hopefully this match with Crookston will help prepare us for section play on Friday.”

Against East Grand Forks the wind was howling so the teams agreed to shorten the matches and play just one set.

The Lumberjacks won 7-0; the Green Wave were shorthanded and didn’t field players at No. 3 or No. 4 singles.

“They were shorthanded but it gave us the chance to move people around in the lineup and I felt like the girls played well despite the conditions,” Fodness said.

The Lumberjacks will travel back to Grand Forks this weekend for the Section 8-2A North tournament at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.

Among the teams in Section 8-2A North are Thief River Falls, Moorhead and Brainerd. Play is set for all day Friday and Saturday.
