GRAND FORKS – Despite having a slightly off-day Tuesday night, the Bemidji High School swimming team still swept their double-dual meet against a pair of Grand Forks schools.

The Lumberjacks defeated Grand Forks Red River 134-29 and topped Grand Forks Central 110-60.

BHS head coach Woody Leindecker said the team was flat despite the dominating score.

“It was pretty lopsided,” Leindecker said. “But both teams might have been missing a few kids.”

The Lumberjacks took first place overall in all but two races – the 100-meter backstroke and the 500 freestyle.

Stephanie Frey won four races, including two individual (100 and 200 free) and was part of two relays (200 medley and 200 free) to help pace the Jacks.

Also racing well, according to Leindecker, were Maris Jahner, who was part of the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams, and Jamie Vanasse, who was on the 400 freestyle relay.

“They swam well, but otherwise we were very flat,” Leindecker said. “But we did just start a heavy phase of training, so we’re working hard.”

Also notching wins were Danielle Hoven, Erin Arndt and Kylie Grossfield in individual events and Libby McRae, Lexie Hendricks, Jahner, Holden, Arndt, Frey and Vanasse as members of relay teams.

The Lumberjacks return to the pool Saturday when they travel to the Duluth East Invitational.

Leindecker said it will be a good test with lots of big schools from the Twin Cities metro area competing.

“We’ll run into some good teams there,” he said. “We’ll be able to race all our horses and see how we stack up against other good teams from around the state.”
