SWIMMING: Bemidji hosts section 8A meet this weekend
BEMIDJI — The section championship and individual entries into the state meet will be on the line today and Saturday when the Bemidji High School girls swimmers and divers host their Section 8A peers at the high school pool.
The Lumberjacks have won the past two section titles and will be in the hunt for a third this weekend.
Joining BHS will be Fosston-Bagley, Park Rapids, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes, Crookston, Thief River Falls, Staples-Motley, Perham and Warroad.
“The goal is to win it again and we have a legitimate shot,” said Bemidji coach Scott Leindecker. “But everything has to fall into place. We graduated the most section points in my tenure at Bemidji and those will have to be replaced. But, so far, things look good.”
Today’s action will include the diving preliminaries at 1 p.m. and the swimming preliminaries at 5 p.m. On Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., the top eight individual and relay finishers will compete for the championship positions while Friday’s ninth through 16th finishers in each event will battle for consolation points.
“Our goal is to get points everywhere we can,” Leindecker said. “We need to get our ducks in a row on Friday and continue to swim our best on Saturday.
“Right now everything looks good on paper but that doesn’t mean anything,” the coach continued. “You have one chance on Friday to earn a lane. Everybody on the roster knows that they have to do their best on Friday to put us into position for Saturday.”
