Suspect in custody after two people are shot in Grand Rapids

Authorities have identified the victims as Paul Russell Johnson, 32, and Rosemary Oberg-Johnson, 59, both of Grand Rapids. They were airlifted to a Duluth hospital and were listed in critical condition Sunday, police said.

A 26-year-old Bovey man is in custody in connection with the shooting, awaiting formal charges. Charges are expected to be filed on Monday.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Jim Denny said in a news release that officers were called to 516 10th Ave. NW at about 8:30 p.m. on a report of a shooting. That's near Blandin Beach on the city's west side.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The Grand Rapids Police Department was assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Itasca County Sheriff's Office and Meds 1 Ambulance.
