Federal Dam man missing after capsized canoe found on Leech Lake

Subcommittee date set for tribal funds

The House Committee on Natural Resources will host an 11 a.m. subcommittee hearing March 1 to assess the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Judgment Fund Distribution Act of 2011, according to Rep. Chip Cravaack, R-Minn.

For the legislation to move forward in the committee mark-up process, a hearing in the Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs is first required.

The legislation aims to release reimbursement funds from the Interior Department that are owed to the Boise Forte, Fond du Lac, Grand Portage, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs, and White Earth bands of Chippewa in Minnesota - five of which reside within the Eighth Congressional District - for federal misfeasance in implementing the Nelson Act of 1889.
