Students participate in band contest

Bemidji High School bands traveled to Fergus Falls March 25 to participate in the Region 8AA solo/ensemble contest sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.

At the contest, students perform a piece of music and are scored on tone quality, intonation, rhythm, balance and blend, technique, musical interpretation and musicianship. They can earn fair, good, excellent or superior scores.

The 15 performing ensembles from BHS received 12 superior ratings and three excellent ratings.

They are the following:

- The BHS Jazz Band received a superior rating. The band consists of senior Ellen Pugleasa, freshman Jack Boyer, senior Jessie Bruns, senior Tim Wisdom, sophomore Aaron Schnackenberg, senior Laura Rogers, junior Forrest Guilfoile, junior Jake Fisher, sophomore Levi Pederson, senior Aaron Johnson, junior Megan Rossman, senior Josef Schlemper, senior Sam Hall, senior Sophie Servatius-Mach, senior Aaron Quamme, freshman Mickey McKeown, senior Marie Pugleasa and senior Jennifer Johnson.

- The BHS Brass Quintet received a superior rating. The quintet consists of juniors Megan Rossman, Betsy Richards, Emily Frosaker, Jake Fisher and Isaac Heath.

- Also receiving superior ratings were freshman Alex Lyren for a French horn solo; senior Jennifer Johnson for a snare drum solo; freshmen Katie Kavochovich and Kim Truedson for a flute duet; sophomore Kate Shultze for a flute solo; senior Corrie Dunshee for a flute solo; junior Aaron Schnackenberg for a bass solo; freshman Derek Hand for a trumpet solo; senior Megan Casper, junior Abby Moudry and sophomore Nicole Vasilakes for a French horn trio; seniors Ellen Pugleasa and Tim Wisdom for a woodwind duet; and junior Jake Fisher for a trombone solo.

- Receiving excellent ratings were seniors Laura Rogers and Wesley Rogers for a low brass duet; senior Jennifer Johnson for a mallet solo and senior Ellen Pugleasa and freshman Jack Boyer for a saxophone duet.

Del Lyren and Amanda Willis accompanied a few of the students with solos on piano.
