Stephen Burre Knudsen, 73, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Bemidji, died Dec. 6, 2008, of cancer at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Bemidji.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Ellen, Kaylen and Samuel Larson and Andie Mattei.
He was born Sept. 20, 1935, to Florence and Stanley Knudsen in Tomahawk, Wis. He graduated from high school in Clermont, Iowa. He earned a bachelor's of arts degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He married Estelle Borstad Sept. 13, 1959, in Tioga, N.D. In 1961, he graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.
He and his wife served parishes in Steele-Dawson-Driscoll, N.D.; First Lutheran, Mandan, N.D.; First Lutheran, Bemidji; Bethlehem Lutheran, Aberdeen, S.D.; Bethlehem Lutheran, Mesa, Ariz.; and St. Andrew Lutheran, in, Las Vegas. He retired in 2001.
He is survived by his children, Stanford Knudsen of Bemidji, Stephanie (Gary) Larson of East Grand Forks, Minn., and Krislyn (Dave) Mattei of Ely, Minn.; siblings, John Knudsen (Marilyn Haar) of Center City, Minn., Arlene (Dale) Foltz of Decorah, Maren Anderson (John Forss) of St. Petersburg, Fla., Olin (Arlette) Knudsen of Onalaska, Wis., and special friend, Grace Veum of Las Vegas and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church.
