Steele offers mayoral platform

While no new candidates filed Thursday for Bemidji City Council, a mayoral candidate who filed Wednesday presented his platform for candidacy.

"I will do almost nothing," said Adam Steele in a write-up of his mayoral ambitions. He plans no new laws, no new taxes and no new buildings.

Steele is a perennial candidate for state offices. Up until this year, he had run in every House 4A race since 1992.

Filing for Bemidji City Council runs through June 1. As of Thursday, the only other candidate for Bemidji mayor is Ron Johnson, the current Ward 3 city councilor. Richard Lehmann, the current mayor, has been endorsed by the Republican Party to oppose incumbent State Rep. John Persell, DFL-District 4A.

In his statement, Steele said he would be in favor of reducing city staff and city laws.

"The basic function of a city government is to provide water and sewer and emergency services," he wrote, "and to do it as efficiently and economically for the residents as possible. We need to focus our city resources on these goals and not on things that lie outside of them."

He also said he wants to repeal the recently passed ordinance governing dog and cat ownership (which also requires cat licensing), increase enforcement of the city's noise ordinance, and increase city support of Peoples Church.

As of Thursday, candidates who have filed for other Bemidji City Council races are:

E Ward 4: incumbent Jerry Downs.

E At-large: Jim Thompson.
