Maas (41-0) opened his state tournament experience with a second-period pin of Adam Kunz of Elk River in the 113-pound division. After taking a 2-0 lead with a takedown to start the match, the junior upped his lead to 5-0 in the second stanza before pinning Kunz 3:09 into the action.

In the second round Maas, the top-rated 113-pound wrestler in Minnesota, and Garrett Caldon of Elk River battled into the third period but Maas won midway through that stanza when he put Caldon on his back and posted a pin at 4:57.

In the first round Caldon upset Tanner Cole of Owatonna 4-3. Cole was ranked second behind Maas in the state ratings but, because Maas defeated Caldon, Cole (39-2) had a very brief tournament as he did not qualify for the wrestlebacks.

In Saturday’s semifinal Maas will face Wade Sullivan of Lakeville North. Sullivan will bring a 34-5 record into the bout.

Johnson, who is rated third in the 182-pound division, had no trouble in his state opener as he pinned Jimmy Kaiser of Mounds View in 3:13. The victory was Johnson’s 41st without a loss and he extended his single-season school pin record to 38.

Johnson opened a 7-3 lead after one stanza and pushed the cushion to 11-4 before he ended the bout with his pin.

In Friday’s quarterfinals Johnson took care of Janse Anderson of White Bear Lake with a pin late in the second period. Johnson led Anderson 2-1 when the towel boy worked his way into position to signal the official that the end of the period was near but before he could bump the referee Johnson worked a quick takedown, put Anderson onto his back and collected the pin.

The BHS senior will now focus on Bobby Steveson of Apple Valley (36-1) who will be his opponent in Saturday’s semifinal round.

Staples gains semifinals

Also winning his opener was Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena’s Daven Staples who blitzed Nick Bennett of Bertha-Hewitt 10-3 in the 170-pound division.

In the quarterfinals Staples (34-2) won again, this time with an 8-4 decision over Dylan Huttunen of United North Central (32-8).

Staples’ next challenge will be provided by Ryan Stottler (32-1) in Saturday’s semifinals.

The Bears had four wrestlers fall in the opening round. At 106 pounds Andrew Nissen (33-6) was tripped 4-3 by Willie Meine of Fertile Beltrami. Lucas Reiplinger (25-12) dropped his first 113-pound match 13-1 to Jared Goldsmith of Chatfield while teammate Kyle Michalek (28-15) lost 10-3 in his 132-pound opener to Jared Willaby of Windom.

Also losing in the opening round was Tanner Templin (31-7) at 195 pounds. Templin fell 7-2 to Hunter Fick of West Central.

All but Nissen made it to the wrestlebacks and continued their state meet experience in the consolation rounds.

Reiplinger dropped his only wrestleback 4-2 and finished 0-2 at the state meet. Michalek also lost in the wrestlebacks but Templin edged Derek Ludwig of Paynesville 3-2 and will wrestle Jake Denn of Madelia in today’s consolation action.

In Class 2A action Alexi Bode of Fosston-Bagley won his opener as he nipped Dylan Johnson of Quad County 6-5 in the 145-pound division. That victory advanced Bode to the Class 2A quarterfinals against Ryan Kottschade of Plainview-Elgin-Millville but Bode (37-6) fell 9-6 and dropped into the wrestlebacks.

Bode remains alive, however, as he won his first wrestleback and will face Cody Ferris of Becker today.
