State wrestling: Maas captures third place at state Class 3A meet
ST. PAUL -- The dreams of winning a state championship were ended for Bemidji's Brian Maas and Kade Johnson, and Daven Staples of Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena Saturday morning as all three area wrestlers fell in the state wrestling semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center.
Maas recovered nicely, however, as he won two matches in the consolation bracket and finished third.
Maas lost 8-5 to Wade Sullivan of Lakeville North in the 113-pound division but Maas pinned Austin Brenner of St. Cloud Tech 24 seconds into overtime to advance to his third-place match.
In the third-place match Maas blistered Jake Bergeland of Centennial 14-3.
After dropping a a 5-1 decision to Bobby Steveson of Apple Valley in the 182-pound championship semifinals, 182 pounds, Johnson won his consolation opener with a pin as he flattened Collin Sohn of Wayzata at the 3:12 mark.
That victory vaulted him into the third-place match where he will face Joe Hoeve of Farmington later today.
Staples fell 6-2 in the Class A 170-pound semifinals to Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska and lost his consolation semifinal 8-5 to Jesse Slater of Adrian. Staples will face Sam Swanson of Trinity in the fifth-place match.
In Class 2A, Alexi Bode of Fosston-Bagley will also wrestle for fifth place later today against Aaron Sweeney of Watertown-Mayer in the 145-pound division.
