Staples stops Leech Lake Legion baseball team
Staples scored three runs in the first inning and went on to down the Leech Lake American Legion 7-2 Monday night at BSU.
Lefthander Gunner Johnson, with seventh inning relief from Jordan Riewer, held Leech Lake to three hits, fanning 18 in the game, 15 by Johnson.
Chad Wittner went the route for Leech Lake, fanning seven and walking none, but giving up 14 hits.
Three hits around a hit batter provided the first inning runs.
Leech Lake scored twice in the second when Mike Hanson walked, Caleb Fisher doubled him home and scored on a wild pitch.
But the home team went down in order in three of the final five frames with Jake Ellis getting a single in the fourth with two outs and Tyler Trosen a single in the sixth with one gone. Neither advanced past first.
Staples was coached for the night by former Bagley High and BSU star Jerry Riewer who replaced his son John who was out of town on a family matter.
The elder Riewer was the long-time Staples High baseball and cross-country coach, now retired.
Leech Lake, which lost its first game with Staples 8-4, dropped to 4-7. It plays a double-header today at Bertha-Hewitt.
