Patty Stanek had a very successful deer opener Saturday. She shot an 11-point buck in the Bemidji area. Here is her story in her own words:

"It was a quiet calm morning. I was just listening to the tundra swans flying over head and I was watching a porcupine in a tree when all of a sudden I heard a snap. I looked to my left and all I saw was this huge rack and my heart was pounding, my knees were shaking, and I got tired of holding my gun and I rested it on my deer stand railing.

"I was looking and looking and I lost sight of the deer. Then I saw it moving again. It looked like it was heading away so I pulled up and shot. It dropped. It looked like it was going to get up again and I shot it once more.

"I got down off my stand and went over to the deer and what I saw was an 11-point buck with a drop down tine with green moss around the antlers, something I have never seen in all the 39 years of deer hunting. My brother Greg knew it was me that had taken a shot so he came over and he walked of the yardage and it was 90 yards through heavy brush. He couldn't believe that I had made that shot."
