St. Philip's School students complete service project

From left, St. Philip's School seventh-graders Megan Serratore, Teather Krueth and Taylor Kane, along with their classmates from teacher Jean Lindow's class, had a special assignment on Oct. 23. For their service project, they bud-capped pine trees they planted last spring for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The capped trees are located at St. Philip's school forest, which is a portion of the Mississippi Headwaters State Forest located south of Bemidji. Last spring, the students planted more than 2,000 white pine and Norway spruce seedlings. DNR forester Jim Gubbels, oversaw the students and demonstrated how to cover the young tree shoots to make them less desirable as a food source for deer. Pioneer Photo/Submitted photo
