St. Cloud Cathedral scores late to defeat Bemidji
BEMIDJI – St. Cloud Cathedral scored twice in the final 22 minutes and those goals helped the Crusaders down the Bemidji girls soccer team 3-2 Saturday night at the middle school field.
Saturday’s outcome snapped Bemidji’s three-game winning streak and dropped the Jacks to 5-2. St. Cloud Cathedral improved to 4-1, its only blemish a 1-0 loss to St. Cloud Apollo in its season opener.
“As a coach I like to see us play against teams of this caliber,” said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. “Cathedral is one of the top teams in the section and by being able to compete with a team like this shows how far our program has improved.”
Ellie Engel opened Saturday’s scoring when the Crusader forward beat BHS netminder Casey Palmer 37 minutes into the action.
Rachel Bitter tied the game 10 minutes into the second half and her goal five minutes later gave the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead.
“Both of Rachel’s goals were scored the same way,” Schoonover said. “She took passes, dribbled through the defense and scored.
“Rachel is a midfielder but we wanted to try her at forward and she was able to pick up the offense right away.”
Bemidji’s lead lasted only three minutes, however, as Sara Leighton beat Palmer at the 58-minute mark. The visitors notched the eventual game-winner with 16 minutes to play when Emily Walsh converted a feed from Sophie Varner.
“Even though we lost the game I thought we played well,” Schoonover said. “When you look at the keeper’s stops (three) it doesn’t reflect the pressure we had on her. We had many shots toward the net but most of them went wide.
“It really was an even game.”
The Lumberjacks head to Grand Rapids on Thursday and will be home next Saturday against Moorhead.
