BEMIDJI -- A band of heavy snow moving through northwest Minnesota created some dangerous driving conditions in the Bemidji area on Friday.

Early in the day, nearly all of the federal, state and county highways in northwest Minnesota were listed as "difficult" on the Minnesota Department of Transportation's road condition website map. The DOT even issued a no-travel advisory in western Marshall and southern Kittson counties due to blowing snow and reduced visibility, according to a press release.

However, by early evening, most roads in and around Bemidji were listed in fair driving conditions on the DOT website.

Snow began falling overnight, becoming heavy at times, and some Bemidji-area residents were reporting between 4 to 6 inches of new snow, including a report of 9 inches near Waskish, Minn., to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, N.D.

The Bemidji area was in a winter storm warning until 7 p.m., according to the weather service, and a blizzard warning was issued in the Red River Valley, including for Grand Forks, as heavy snowfall and strong winds were creating blizzard-like conditions.

Despite the snowfall, temperatures in the Bemidji area remained in the 20s and 30s for most of Friday, but cooled off in the evening hours. So, while some of the new snow did melt, a lot hardened in the later hours and should stick around at least through next week. Today's high temperature is forecast at only 14 degrees, and there are chances for wind chills as low as 27 below. Sunday's high temperature is only expected to be 17 degrees; Monday is forecast at 24 before dropping down again Tuesday and Wednesday at 18 degrees, according to the weather service. We won't see 30 again until Thursday and Friday.
