Big Ed's Sports Trivia: What major league baseball team had an infield that remained together for eight seasons, a major league record?

Pro Baseball: Last Tuesday, Toronto beat Cincinnati, 14-1. The Bluejays got 10 runs and 11 hits off Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo in the one inning he pitched. That fluffs up the old ERA.

Thursday, Matt Garza pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 as the Rays beat Florida, 6-1. Garza is 6-4 with a 3.76 ERA for the Rays this season. Albert Pujols returned from the disabled list Thursday and went 4-4 but the Cardinals lost, 3-2 to the Tigers.

Friday, the Mets beat the Yankees, 15-6 in the first game or a double-header. Carols Delgado hit two homeruns (13) and drove in a Mets single game record nine runs. Luis Castilla (ex-Twin) scored five of the Mets' runs. The Yankees took game two, 9-0.

Saturday, the Dodgers beat the Angels, 1-0 despite not getting a hit. Jered Weaver (six innings) and reliever Jose Arrendondo (two innings), combined on the eight-inning no-hitter.

Also Saturday, the Yankees edged the Mets, 3-2. Johan Santana (7-7) was the losing pitcher. He hasn't been dominant in many games this season.

Sunday, the White Sox beat the Cubs, 5-1. The White Sox swept the Cubs just a week after the Cubs swept them in Wrigley Field. The White Sox maintain their 1½ game lead on the Twins. Jim Thome of the White Sox, hit his 522nd homerun, moving past Ted Williams and Willie McCovey and into 16th place on the all-time list.

The Tampa Bay Rays are 49-32 at the half way point of the season and are in first place in the American League's East Division , a half game ahead of the Red Sox.

The Detroit Tigers have won 16 of their last 20 games and are over .500 (41-40) for the first time this season. They will challenge the Twins and White Sox for the Central Division title.

Twins Notes: The Minnesota Twins (45-37) ran their winning streak to 10 games before losing to the Brewers Saturday. The Twins won five out of six games this week and 11 of their last 12 games. Despite their hot streak, the Twins still trail the White Sox by 1½ games. During their recent hot streak, the Twins beat several former Cy Young award winners (Randy Johnson, Brandon Webb, Jake Peavy and Greg Maddox). The Twins starting pitching has been unbelievable in the last two weeks.

Last Tuesday, the Twins beat the Padres, 3-1, as they hit two homeruns (Brian Buscher and Brendon Harris) in the ninth inning off Trevor Hoffman. Kevin Slowey pitched six shutout innings.

Wednesday, the Twins won 9-6 over the Padres as Harris (4) and Craig Monroe (7) hit homers. Glenn Perkins go that e victory.

Thursday, the Twins fell behind 3-0 but rallied for a 4-3 win over the Padres as Justin Morneau hit a homerun (12) and drove in three runs. Scott Baker (4-2) got the win. Brian Buscher is hitting over .350 and has taken over the third base job.

Friday, the Twins fell behind 6-3 but rallied again to win, 7-6 over the Brewers. Joe Mauer hit the game winning homerun in the bottom of the eighth to break a 6-6 tie.

Saturday, the Twins' 10-game winning streak came to an end as the Brewers beat them, 5-1. The Brewers had won nine of their last 12 games at that point.

Sunday, the Twins won 5-0 behind a three-hit complete game shutout by Kevin Slowey (5-6). Slowey struck out eight. The Twins have made up six full games on the White Sox but still trail the Pale Horse by 1½ games.

Sunday, the Twins put outfielder Michael Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list. Cuddyer's offense has been sub par this season, especially his power.

Francisco Liriano (4-2, 4.44 ERA) has pitched better at Triple A Rochester but is a long way from dominating hitters like he did two years ago.

The Twins have surprised me with all their injuries and off seasons, I would have thought the Twins would have been 20 games behind. This could be Ron Gardenhire's best managing job. The Twins has a 14-4 interleague record this year. last season, they were 16-2. Unbelievable.

NBA Draft: The NBA draft was held Thursday. The Chicago Bulls took guard Derrick Ruse of Memphis with the number one overall pick. The Miami Heat, with the number two pick, took forward Michael Beasley of Kansas State. The Timberwolves, with the number three pick, took guard O.J. Mayo of USC. Friday morning though, the Timberwolves traded Mayo, guard Marko Jarix, forward Antoine Walker and guard Greg Buckner to the Memphis Grizzlies for their number five overall pick, forward Kevin Lowe of UCLA, guard Mike Miller, 6-8 forward Brian Cardinal and 7-0 center Jason Collins. I thought it was a good fit with the Timberwolves and Lowe was. Plus, they got Miller (16.7 points, 48 percent on three-pointers) and got rid of a couple of malcontents along with their big contracts. Mayo may turn out to be a star but this was a good deal for Minnesota.

Sports Extra: The Minnesota Lynx women's basketball team (8-7) won two out of three games this week. Tuesday, the Lynx snapped a five-game streak as they defeated the new York L:iberty, 91-69. Seimone Augustus scored 21 points and had nine assists to lead the Lynx. Thursday, they won, 80-76 over Sacramento as Augustus scored 23 points. The Thundercats are 2-12.

Monday, the Bemidji Mudcats (12-6, 4-0 in the Arrowhead), won 14-2 over Itasca. Nathan Heim (Kelliher grad), went 2-2 with a double and three RBIs as he played third base.

Kalvig also coached summer baseball (Blackduck Knights) for many years. Both were very successful as dedicated coaches and are classy individuals. Thanks for your years of service.
