Speck is the new manager at Heritage House
The Heritage Assisted Living House in Blackduck welcomes a new LPN House Manager, Kelly Speck to their staff.
Speck, who came in to the position May 2, has lived in the Bemidji area her entire life and has been a nurse for 20 years.
"I started off my career as a CNA for what was then Beltrami Nursing Home," she said, "after that, I worked at the clinic for 10 years, then I worked for another organization on a corporate level for assisted living, but I always wanted to be the person that ran this type of house."
She first heard about the position at the Heritage House five years ago when it was open.
"I applied for this position five years ago, got an interview, got a second interview and was really excited," she said. "When I didn't get the job, I was disappointed, but then here it was again five years later and here I am now."
She said so far she likes the job, the community and especially -- the residents.
"The residents are my favorite part of the job. They make you smile everyday," she said. "Plus, Blackduck is a cool town."
Speck said that she has definitely come into the job with rose colored glasses and has high hopes for the future of the Heritage House.
"My biggest goal is that I want the residents to get out in the community more," she explained. "We've been going to the jam session. The first time I had three residents go with and the second time I had five."
She also said that she hopes to team up with Alma Olhava who is the director of the Blackduck Senior Apartments and get both of their residents together.
"We want to do some barbecues and ice creams socials -- they need to enjoy summer," she said.
Speck said that she would love to get volunteers to come help take residents out so that they can be more involved in the community.
"More volunteers would give us more opportunities."
The residents are also starting to do more crafts and more baking.
"I just want them to stay busy and happy," Speck said.
Speck lives in the Turtle River area with her husband, Dean. She also has three children ages 24, 21 and 13 as well as a three-year-old granddaughter.
