Someone Special volunteers for July 20, 2014
The Bemidji Pioneer, Paul Bunyan Broadcasting, Ken K. Thompson and the United Way recognize "Someone Special Volunteers" who have made significant contributions to the community.Bemidji Community Food Shelf has nominated Leo Jedlicka and Dick Johnson as Someone Special volunteers.
The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is an emergency food source for people living within the
Bemidji school district that offers free choice shopping for qualifying households. They have a large warehouse in which they store food. Each morning when they are open, volunteers arrive and put out the "gleaning" items received from the grocery stores. Jedlicka is usually the first to arrive and is often waiting to get to work as the director pulls into the parking lot. Jedlicka manages the produce and potatoes and is a regular fixture in the morning warehouse. He is an energetic powerhouse at a young 87-years-old. The Food Shelf participates in a federal program, they are required to keep a database of information regarding household sizes, food shelf visits, etc. Dick Johnson maintains their electronic tracking software. He is eternally "on-call' and always comes with a smile on his face. In addition, he assists clients, hauls trailers, and builds raised bed gardens. The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is so grateful for his expertise and good humor.
