Solberg still in running for state
The Bemidji girls tennis players had successful starts at the individual portion of the 8AA tournament Friday as three of the four Lumberjacks entrants advanced to the second round.
The run for a state tournament trip ended for all but one of the entrants, however, as only Jessica Solberg advanced to today's quarterfinals.
Solberg, who blitzed India Fritz of Detroit Lakes 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of singles action, eliminated Tyra Quitmeyer of Alexandria 6-3, 6-3 to gain today's 9 a.m. quarterfinal. Solberg will face Taylor Tarrolly of St. Cloud Tech.
Bemidji's other singles entrant, Claudia Bellew, dropped her opener, falling to Sara Wennerstrand of Brainerd 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles play Emma Nielsen and Katie Ditmanson gained the second round by downing Katie Trygg and Jordan Slaughter of Moorhead 6-3, 6-4. Nielsen and Ditmanson then played Nichole Gervenak and Megan Hintz of Brainerd and lost 6-2, 6-3.
Amy Frosaker and Kenzie Schultz also teamed for a win in the opening round as the BHS doubles tandem dumped Kayla Michelson and Jessica Glatt of Moorhead 6-4, 6-0.
Schultz and Frosaker were eliminated by Kayla Kraemer and Mikinzee Salo of Brainerd in the second round, however, dropping the match 6-1, 6-3.
