SOCCER: SMSU scores four unanswered to top Bemidji State 4-3
BEMIDJI — Led by a three-goal effort from Miranda Cadena, the No. 18 Southwest Minnesota State soccer team scored four unanswered goals to remain undefeated and gain a 4-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Bemidji State Saturday at Chet Anderson Stadium.
BSU had a 2-0 lead at halftime thanks to an early (87 seconds in) score from Mari Wallestad and another by Mary O’Brien in the 20th minute.
In the second half the Beavers padded their lead when Jessie Voeller scored a goal with an assist from Rachel Sheller in the 56th minute to make it 3-0.
However, that lead wouldn’t last. The Mustangs answered just 40 seconds later on a goal from Vanesa Corona.
It helped spark a quick five-minute flurry from Cadena and SMSU.
The score would spark a three-goal, five-minute flurry for SMSU. In the 62nd minute, the Cadena would get her first goal of the game. Eighty-four seconds later, Cadena made good on a breakaway to tie the score a 3-3.
In the 89th minute Cadena completed the hat trick and gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 4-3.
The Beavers fall to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in NSIC play.
They’ll be back in action today at 1 p.m. when they welcome Sioux Falls for BSU’s annual Senior Day match.
