SOCCER: Minnesota State scores three unanswered to top BSU 3-1
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, as Minnesota State Mankato scored three unanswered goals to topple the Beavers 3-1 Saturday at Chet Anderson Stadium.
The Beavers (4-1, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fired a goal just two minutes into the game to take a lead. Junior Mary O’Brien got loose on a breakaway and beat one defender before shooting it past goalkeeper Molly McGough.
But in the 27th minute, MSU — the No. 8 ranked team in the nation — took over.
Senior Courtney Vallarelli beat BSU freshman keeper Amanda Garvin for her third goal of the year to even the match at 1-1.
Six minutes later, Emily Moris made it 2-1 Mavericks after redirecting Korey Kronforst’s shot on goal to go up 2-1.
In the second half BSU kept close but the Mavericks put it out of reach in the 89th minute with a goal from Kronforst.
For the match, Minnesota State held an edge over Bemidji State in shots (19-7), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (6-1). Garvin stopped a match-high nine shots for BSU.
The Beavers return to the pitch today for another NSIC match against Concordia-St. Paul.
