SOCCER: Four BSU players named all-NSIC
BURNSVILLE — Bemidji State’s Mary O’Brien, Tiffany VanHaaften, Samantha Lumberg and Megan Castro (M, Winnipeg, Manitoba) have been selected for All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors.
O’Brien was named Second Team All-NSIC, while VanHaaften, Lumberg, and Castro were named Third Team All-NSIC.
O’Brien, a sophomore from Maplewood, started in all 19 games for the Beavers and led the team in scoring with 10 goals, which included two game-winners, to go with four assists and finished the season with 24 points. She finished tied for second among conference players in goals (10) and tied for third in points (24).
VanHaaften, a junior from Chaska, was a force in the midfield for the Beavers both offensively and defensively. She led the team in assists with six and finished the season with three goals which included two header goals.
In addition to the All-Conference selection, VanHaaften (the team captain) was also named to the Capitol One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) College Division Academic All-District First Team.
VanHaaften carries a 3.88 cumulative GPA and is an exercise science major.
Lumberg, a junior from Woodbury, anchored the backline that helped the Beavers earn five shutouts in 2012, which ranked seventh in the NSIC. The junior also earned a point this season, contributing an assist.
Castro a freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba, finished the 2012 season with two goals and four assists in midfield. Her eight points ranked fourth overall on the team.
