SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Mary O’Brien and Megan Castro each scored to power the Bemidji State soccer team to a 2-1 victory over NSIC Sioux Falls Saturday.
The victory extends the Beavers’ winning streak to three games and brings its overall record of 6-2-1, while it is 4-2-1 in NSIC play. They’re currently sitting at fourth place in the NSIC with 15 points. The Cougars are in last and are 0-9 overall.
The Beavers put one away early when O’Brien received a pass from Maria McLeod at the 3:50 mark and shot the ball from outside the box past USF goaltender Corrin Cook. The goal was O’Brien’s sixth of the season.
Bemidji State was outshot 8-4 in the first half of play but was able to take a 1-0 lead into half time.
The score remained 1-0 until the 57:34 mark, when Castro dribbled through two defenders and placed the ball into the upper right corner of the net and scored what would be the game winning goal. The goal was Castro’s second of her career and first game-winner.
The Cougars got one past BSU goalkeeper Sonja Barr at the 68:12 mark, but the Beavers held on to win the game.
Bemidji State was outshot in the game 13-11 but had six shots on goal compared to five by Sioux Falls.
Goalkeepers Barr and Brittany Tietz combined for a total of four saves. Barr, who was in goal in the final 45 minutes of play, was credited with the win and is now 4-0-1 on the season.
Bemidji State continues its current road trip today with a 1 p.m. match with Southwest Minnesota State University at Regional Event Center in Marshall.
