SOCCER: Bemidji girls fall to St. Cloud Cathedral
ST. CLOUD -- St. Cloud Cathedral scored two early goals and Bemidji never recovered, losing 2-1 in girls soccer action Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud.
"We started off slow and sluggish and let them get a few early goals," BHS head coach Kelly Schoonover said. "We were playing from behind almost immediately."
The Crusaders (4-1) got on the board first with a goal in the 9th minute.
Maura Joul scored off a corner kick with an assist from Ellie Engel to go up 1-0.
Later in the half, the Crusaders struck again.
This time, Joul got the assist in the 23rd minute, lofting a cross to Aiden McCormick to take a 2-0 lead.
After halftime, the Lumberjacks (3-3) picked up the pace and finally found a goal at the 67th minute. Maea Wall found the net with an assist from Jillian Ricci to cut Cathedral's lead in half.
Although BHS played better after getting that second goal the Jacks couldn't find an equalizer and ended up losing 2-1.
"They're a team I think we can play with," Schoonover said. "I mean, they're a good team but I think we could have done better ourselves. We kicked it in gear later but ran out of time to score again."
Cathedral had 12 shots on goal, Bemidjii goalkeeper Casey Palmer made 10 saves. Cathedral goalie KJ Heinen made six saves on seven BHS shots.
"All in all I think we played well," Schoonover said. "We just have to play with immediacy from the first whistle."
The Lumberjacks return to the pitch Tuesday when they'll host Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
