The Sheriff's Office received a call at 3:40 p.m. Saturday from a man who said his friend had suffered severe injuries when he hit a tree with his snowmobile on a trail close to the south entrance of Itasca State Park, about 20 miles north of Park Rapids, a press release said.

Emergency responders included those from the Sheriff's Office, Hubbard County First Responders, North Ambulance and North Memorial Air Care Unit responded to the scene, the release said. Federly was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Federly had been riding a 2002 Polaris snowmobile in Itasca State Park when he attempted to round a corner and struck a tree, the release said.

Authorities believe that an icy trail may have been a factor in the crash, the release said. An autopsy is scheduled and the incident remains under investigation.
