SKIING: Bemidji girls, boys teams place seventh at Mt. Itasca
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

COLERAINE – The Bemidji Nordic ski team didn’t have any real snow to compete on during their first race Saturday afternoon. Still, for head coach Mark Walters, it was a good first meet at the Mount Itasca Winter Sports Center in Coleraine.

“It was all on man-made snow, obviously,” Walters said. “But there were some bright points for us. We had some interesting results and solid individual performances.”

The Lumberjacks’ girls team finished seventh out of 15 teams with 271 points, while the boys squad also placed seventh, out of 13 teams, scoring 275 points. The race was sponsored by Grand Rapids.

Duluth East took first in the girls race with a score of 389 while Ely won the boys race with 370.

For the girls, Morgan Sagedahl led the Lumberjacks, finishing in 24th place with a time of 21 minutes. Duluth East’s Anna Kubek won the 5.4 kilometer skate race with a time of 17:02.

On the boys side, Tony Sagedahl took 12th with a time of 17:07. Brainerd’s Zean Baker took first at 15:47.

“We did have some solid performances for both the boys and girls,” Walters said. “But it’s hard to tell at this point, since we’ve only gone out a few times with the weather. This was a challenging hard pack. It was an icy course.”

TrekNorth also competed in the girls race. The Sundogs finished 10th out of 15 teams with 169 points; Hannah Mardi was the top finisher at 21:12.

The Lumberjacks are scheduled to host a race Dec. 15 at the Montebello Trails, weather permitting.
