Skarperud takes medalist honor in Men's Championship division
BEMIDJI -- Matt Skarperud of Omaha and Johnny Larson of Springfield needed extra holes to decide which golfer would capture the medalist honor of the 2013 Birchmont Men's Championship division.
The two friends played together in Tuesday's second day of qualifying and each finished his rounds with identical scores of 69-69-138.
When they entered the scoreboard area following the round they learned that a few options existed for snapping the tie. The fairest option, however, was a playoff which Matt Skarperud eventually won.
Skarperud's reward is an opening match-play battle against Bobby Frazzini of Medina who qualified at 155. Larson's first-round opponent will be Ekren Miller of Bemidji who also finished with a 155.
Seeded third in the Men's Championship field is Bill Carlson of Fargo who carded a 139. Tim Skarperud of Grand Forks shot 141 while Toby Palmiscno of Bemidji and Jim Foss of Roseau completed the top-five with rounds of 74-68-142.
"I played well," Palmiscno said. "I only play three or four tournaments a year and it takes me awhile to learn how to play tournament golf again.
"During Monday's 74 I scraped it around a bit but on Tuesday I had some breaks and I putted very well. And in match play putts are very important."
The Men's Championship hopefuls will hit the first tee starting at 8:05 a.m. today. In addition to Palmiscno, the field includes Bemidji golfers Paul Daman (144), Jeff Peltier (149), Troy Haluptzok (154) and Miller (155) plus Aaron Leintz of Bagley (153).
