BEMIDJI - The flag that two sisters raised in memory of their mother immediately began waving Wednesday in the wind.

"Mom's probably talking," quipped Donna Liend.

Liend and her sister, Lynda Moe, raised the Donate Life flag Wednesday afternoon outside of Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. The flag will fly throughout April.

The hospital joined others across the nation as it took part in Flags Across America, an initiative to honor and celebrate the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been affected by organ, eye and tissue donation.

The campaign rallies every donor hospital and transplant center, as well as all recovery agencies, to collectively fly the Donate Life flag during April, which is National Donate Life Month.

Liend and Moe raised the flag in honor of their late mother, Beulah Stenerson, 74, of Bagley, who died in January 2010. Upon her death, Stenerson donated her corneas.

One cornea, Liend said, was immediately transplanted. The other remains in long-term storage for possible research and transplant.
