Siems to receive conservation award
Dann Siems of Bemidji will be honored as a Minnesota conservation champion by Conservation Minnesota Oct. 12 at the ninth annual Conservation Leadership Awards.
A news release from Conservation Minnesota described Siems as a true citizen conservationist, with efforts ranging from educating youth on the importance of fish habitat to helping protect Minnesota's native wild rice from genetic contamination. Examples include his contribution to Bemidji State University's People and the Environment Program, both as a professor and mentor to his students for 12 years.
As an aquatic biologist for Beltrami Soil and Water Conservation District, he conducted significant public education on the implications of water quality and nutrient trends in lakes.
Siems also serves on the Minnesota Star Lakes board and the Headwaters Science Center board and is an adviser to the Minnesota Citizens for Science Education.
The other honorees include Rep. Julie Bunn and Sen. Kathy Saltzman; Sen. Dennis Frederickson; and Eureka Recycling.
